THE QUEST FOR GOD (Part 9).
Psalm 42. Verse 7 reads:
Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
The quest for God is premised on a deep engagement between a man and God. It involves the depth of God calling or reaching out unto the depth of a man and vice versa. The realm of God is filled with unspeakable mysteries, which he desires to share with men to position them to participate in his purpose on earth. It is these mysteries that are described as the deep things of God. Deuteronomy 29 verse 29 confirms this as follows:
The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
The secret things or mysteries are deep truths in the custody of God until he reveals them to men for their benefit and the benefit of their children or descendants. 1 Corinthians 2 verses 9 & 10 read:
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, Neither have entered into the heart of man, The things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
The deep things of God are not in common place, and they are not attained by human ability. God makes them accessible to men by the agency of the Holy Spirit, who has the power to search the spirit realm and place information within the reach of men. The Holy Spirit is acquainted with the moves and timings of God and gives men the essential insight to flow along with changing seasons. David rightly said, “Deep calls unto deep.” This requires men who, out of a deep hunger and thirst for God, are able to draw on the inexhaustible supplies of God. This hunger and thirst are expressed through a strong devotion to God in prayer and meditation on the word of God. According to Matthew 5, verse 6:
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
The blessing of filling is described in today’s text as waves and billows that go over men. These refer to the moves of God, which are equally moves of the Holy Spirit, and represent divine empowerment for accomplishment. Beloved, in the environment of deep calls, the moves of God abound.
