2 Corinthians 4. Verse 13 reads:
It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak,
Anything we see in the physical has its origin in the spirit. Without the spiritual dimension, there wouldn’t be any physical expression. Thus, the spirit of a thing is what defines it. Today’s text speaks of the spirit of faith. This is the spirit that drives the life of faith, and without it, there is no faith walk. The spirit of faith has two expressions as follows:
- A heart that believes.
- A mouth that declares what is believed.
A heart that believes is one that walks in full assurance of what God has said. It is a heart into which is grafted the word of God, which encompasses the promises and the prophecies of the word of God. The act of believing embraces the reality of a thing in the heart before its manifestation in the tangible world. It is for this reason that Hebrews 11 verse 1 defines faith as follows:
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Substance and evidence used in this passage refer to realities of the heart; though physically intangible, they exist in the heart. So, in believing, the spirit of faith lays hold on tomorrow’s realities today. Secondly, the spirit of faith declares what is believed out of the mouth as a testament to its manifestation. This declaration is patterned after God’s operation during creation. The Most High called forth non-existent things into being. What the spirit of faith does is that it calls the intangible reality, which the heart has embraced, into manifestation in the tangible world. Within the belief of the heart and confession of the mouth is locked up God’s power of salvation. Romans 10 verses 8-10
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Beloved, the spirit of faith relies on the word of faith in the heart and in the mouth to lay hold on the salvation of the Lord. May we permit the word of faith to find expression in our lives.
