Romans 4. Verses 18-22 read:
Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
We are still on our discussion on faith and the promises of God. Faith life is fraught with a lot of impediments or oppositions, which the believer must be ready to surmount. This was true about the faith walk of patriarch Abraham. God’s promise upon his life was that he would become the father of many nations. For twenty-five years, he had to wait for this promise to be fulfilled. With the passage of time and on the basis of natural laws, the chances of the fulfilment of the promise seemed very bleak.
Scripture says that against hope, Abraham believed in hope. In other words, based on natural laws, hopes of having a child were dashed. However, he found hope in God and the promise God made to him as the father of many nations. His faith was in the fact that what God had said, he was able and faithful to fulfill. Throughout the waiting period, Abraham did not renege on his faith. He refused to consider the lack of capacity of his hundred year old body and the deadness of Sarah’s womb to produce children. Whilst death was evident in and around him, he still hoped in the realization of life in God.
Abraham did not stagger or waver at the promise of God through unbelief. His position on the promise was singular; that God would bring to fruition what he had promised. In the strength of his faith, Abraham gave glory to God in spite of all the odds. A strong faith gives glory to God whilst a weak faith wallows in complains. Abraham was fully convinced that God was able to perform what he had promised. These actions of Abraham were reckoned unto him as righteousness. A life of faith gives men a right to stand before God. Beloved, like Abraham, we must not permit any physical condition or natural law to dissuade us from the promise the Lord has made to us. God’s promise is as good as his performance. God’s word is his bond. If he speaks, we must consider it done regardless of the oppositions we see.
