THE QUEST FOR GOD (Part 8).

THE QUEST FOR GOD (Part 8).

Psalm 42. Verses 5 & 6 read:

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God: For I shall yet praise him For the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: Therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

As already discussed, the soul is made up of the mind, the emotion, and the will of a man. These human faculties are susceptible to the external pressures of the outer world. Bad news and unpleasant occurrences transmit unimaginable stresses to the soul. It is expedient therefore that every soul develops a bounce back mechanism unto recovery and remain on winning ways. Short of this, the soul would be drowned in negative happenings of life.

In today’s text, David questions why his soul was downcast and disquieted within him. He understood the danger of keeping his soul in such a state. He quickly called on his soul to hope in the Lord. Here, we understand that the soul can be affixed to either the negatives of life or keep hoping in God. Hope in God triggers praise and stimulates inner rest, which guarantees the security of a man’s future.

In switching to winning ways, David says that he will remember the Lord from three significant locations. These locations perfectly describe the journey of the soul unto winning ways. These locations are Jordan, Hermon, and Mizar. Jordan means “to go down” or “to descend.” In the downtimes of life, it is appropriate to remember the Lord, who alone can intervene and turn around our situation. Hermon means consecration. Whilst remembering the Lord, the child of God must consecrate or dedicate himself to the Lord. God assumes control of whatever is consecrated to him. Mizar means a covering. When men come to the place of remembrance, the Lord becomes their covering. This speaks of protection and a beautified look.

Rememberance ensures a switch to God and a focus on him. These are key components of man’s quest for God. Whilst in the descent of Jordan, the power of remembrance draws the believer to the consecration of Hermon and finally brings him to Mizar, the place of divine covering. Let us get the bounce back mechanism of our souls working at all times through our quest for God.
