LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Part 17).
Romans 8 Verses 12-13 read:
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Indebtedness is one thing every man would love to avoid, if possible, because the debtor stays in servitude to the one he is indebted to. Today’s text seeks to define the believer, and it clearly states that he is not indebted to the flesh. This means that as believers, we are not subject to the whims and caprices of the godlessness of the flesh. Once a man is indebted to the flesh, he is helpless in resisting its ungodly desires that lead to sin.
Death is inevitable for a life that is lived by the flesh; both spiritual and eternal death. Spiritilual death speaks of a separation from the “zoe” life of God. It is a life that reflects the fullness of God’s purpose for a man. Where “zoe” life is present, men walk in godliness and partake of the blessings of the Lord. This is what a man misses or falls short of when he walks in the flesh. Eternal death has to do with the final judgement to the disobedient in hell fire. This is the destined end for Satan, his agents, subjects, and followers. It is, therefore, pathetic that people who are born again will walk in the flesh and end up there. If you are a believer, the walk in the flesh is not an option to consider.
Scripture is magnanimous in showing believers how to overcome the flesh. We are called upon to mortify or put to death the deeds of the flesh by the power of the Holy Spirit. Where the Spirit takes charge and is granted unrestrained expression, the flesh can not stand. It simply gives way. This is the means by which the believer can experience the “zoe” life. This is the believer’s lot, and we must ensure that we experience it.
