PRAISE YE THE LORD. (Part 7)
Psalm 148. Verse 7-14 read:
“Praise the Lord from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps: Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word: Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars: Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl: Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children: Let them praise the name of the Lord : for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the Lord.”
Ww are still on the call to all creation to give praise to their Creator. Yes, creation can not stop praising its creator. Most of the things we see and consider as part of nature are also avenues of expression of God’s praise. From today’s text, the psalmist calls on dragons and other creatures of the deep or jungle to praise God. He also calls on fire, hail, snow, vapour, and stormy wind to praise God by fulfilling God’s word.
The psalmist goes on to call on mountains, all hills, fruitful trees, and all cedars to praise God. Any time we see the beauty of these created things, it is indicative of their praise to God. The psalmist also calls on beasts, all cattle, creeping things, and flying fowls to render their praise.
The psalmist then calls on the crown of God’s creation, that is, man, to ascribe praise to God. He specifically calls on all people; princes and judges of the earth, both young and old, men and maidens, and children to praise the name of the Lord.
The psalmist gives some reasons for the call on all creation to praise the Lord. First of all, he indicates that God has an excellent name; one to which all issues and situations succumb. The psalmist also mentions that God’s glory transcends both heaven and earth.
In conclusion, the psalmist indicates that God is able to exalt the horn or strength of His people through the praise of His saints, who He describes as a people that are near him. Whilst all creation is called to praise God, it is each individual creature’s responsibility to respond to the call. Let us, therefore, respond positively to the call to praise the Lord.
