PRAISE YE THE LORD. (Part 8)

Psalms 149. Verses 1‭-‬3 read

“Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.”

God abides in the environs of praise and his throne surrounded by the praise of his creation. If men choose not to praise him, the rocks will, and the trees will clap their hands to celebrate him. All men must make a choice to continually create the praise atmosphere for God to dwell in. God forbid that men, the masterpiece of God’s creation, who are patterned after God’s image and likeness, will leave God’s praise to less endowed creatures. Psalm 149 is yet another call on men to praise the Lord.

In this Psalm, the psalmist indicates how we must praise God. The psalmist begins with the call to sing unto the Lord a new song. This is referred to as the ‘Tehillah’ praise in Hebrew. One of the pleasant and heartwarming ways of expressing praise is by singing and making melody unto God. God expects creativity in our singing through the release of new songs unto him. The new song always stirs up our hearts in adoration to God and spices up our offering of praise to the Lord.

The psalmist calls on men to sing God’s praises in the congregation or in the assembly of believers. In other words, God’s praise must be openly and shamelessly declared in his honour in the gathering of the saints. God loves to receive the corporate praise of His saints because it is infused with the corporate spice of unity and love of the saints. The psalmist calls on Israel to rejoice, and the children of Zion to be joyful in their king, in this case, God. The celebration and rejoicing in praise find their true meaning when our praise is attributed to God. God is the centre of any true praise, and he is deserving of praise.

The psalmist also calls on men to praise God in a dance. This speaks of rhythmic movement of the body in response to songs of praise. This dimension of praise is rooted in the admonishment that everything within men must praise God. Finally, the psalmist calls on men to use musical instruments such as timbrels and harps to praise God.

The psalmist is not in doubt about how God is to be praised, and he makes it clear to all men. Let us, therefore, go all out to contribute our quota to the atmosphere of praise as a habitation for the Most High.
