LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Part 7).
John 16. Verses 12-15 read:
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
We are still discussing the identity and operations of the Holy Spirit. In today’s text, Jesus indicated to his disciples that he had more to tell them than they could bear. The disciples lacked the capacity to receive what he had to offer. Giving it to them would, therefore, amount to a waste of valuable knowledge. It is important to understand that the build-up of spiritual insight is progressive. Every insight a man grasps becomes a base that opens him up for the next higher level of insight. This progressive build-up of knowledge is beautifully explained in Isaiah 28 verses 9-10 as follows:
Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
To continue with the systematic build-up of spiritual insight for his disciples, Jesus promised the coming of the Holy Spirit, whom he described as the spirit of truth. The duty of the Holy Spirit is to guide men into all truth in a progressive manner. Yes, by virtue of the Holy Spirit, men can be exposed to all truth, similar to the life of Jesus during his incarnation. The Holy Spirit is the guide for the journey into all truth. When we are on track, he spurs us on to continue. When we veer off track, he calls us to order via the inward witness.
The Holy Spirit does not speak of his own. He speaks of what he hears and tells of what is to come. He advocates what the Father and Son stand for. He also makes known the future to men to inspire hope in men and guide their walk. His operations glorify Christ and empower men to walk as Christ walked and exhibit the dominion he exhibited over the forces of evil. The Holy Spirit does nothing of himself. He primarily consolidates and builds upon what Christ did and taught. He does this through ordinary men like you and I for the revelation of the glory of God.
