LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Part 8).
Romans 8. Verses 26-27 read:
“Likewise, the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searches the heart knows the mind of the Spirit, and he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
In today’s text, Apostle Paul introduces the Holy Spirit as the helper of the believer’s infirmities. These infirmities refer to the limitations of man’s own ability to please God. It takes the help or enabling power of the Holy Spirit to do so. One of man’s greatest infirmities is his inability to maintain a fervent and consistent prayer life. For many believers, prayer, which is supposed to be their spiritual breath, is more of a chore. Prayer is actually a measure of one’s level of dependence on God, and it is essential for a victorious life. It is expedient that believers rise above the infirmities of the flesh by the help of the Holy Spirit to match up to the standard of prayer and life to which God has called them.
The specific infirmity mentioned in today’s text is that men do not know what they should pray for as they ought. In other words, men are bereft of what they should pray for and how they should pray for it. At this level of operation, prayer becomes a boring venture, and men resign from it and merely wish that all will go well with them. To resolve this situation, God gave men his Holy Spirit. According to Romans 8 verse 15:
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
By means of the Holy Spirit, believers have received the spirit of adoption. This spirit of adoption cries out unto God, the Father. From this cry emanates prayer under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Through the spirit of adoption, the believer is able to make intercession with unexplainable groaning or travail, which bring to fruition the purpose of God. The same Holy Spirit who searches and knows the hearts of men, is also acquainted with the mind, plans, and purposes of God. He therefore makes intercession to God through the believer according to the will of God. From the place of not knowing what to pray for and how to pray for it, the Holy Spirit drives the believer to pray according to God’s will. This is the amazing help the Holy Spirit offers in our development of a prayer life. Beloved, God responds favourably to his will. He will surely answer the prayer that is in accordance with his will.
