LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Part 6).

John 16. Verses 7-11 read:

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Before his departure to heaven, Jesus made his disciples aware of the coming of the Holy Spirit as a companion in his similitude. Jesus explained that it was expedient that he went to the Father as the condition that would usher in the Holy Spirit, whom he described as the Comforter. Though he is a spirit, the Holy Spirit comes with the reassuring and encouraging presence similar to that of a physical being if men learn to relate to him in the spirit. Jesus had to depart in order to send the Holy Spirit to men.

Jesus outlined three specific operations the Holy Spirit will carry out in relation to the world of humanity. He will reprove or convict men of sin, righteousness, and judgement. These convictions bring an awareness of sin and righteousness to men. It also makes men aware that their failure to switch from sin to righteousness will make them suffer the judgement of God, which represents the consequences of their wrongdoing. From this, we understand that one of the primary assignments of the Holy Spirit is to highlight the work of salvation executed by Christ so that no man will have an excuse in judgement.

Jesus went on to provide the reasons underlying the convictions of the Holy Spirit as follows:

  1. He will convict the world of sin because men have failed to believe in the Saviour. The fundamental sin of men is their failure to believe in Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ is the doorway to accessing the salvation of God.
  2. He will convict the world of righteousness because Jesus has moved to the Father. Jesus’ movement to the Father means that it is over with his earthly ministry. In other words, he has secured justification for all men. Receiving the work of justification will make men access the righteous walk.
  3. He will convict the world of judgement because Satan or the prince of this world has been judged. Satan has been condemned to eternal damnation, and he is out to get men to stay in sin so that they will join him in damnation.

Beloved the Holy Spirit is out convicting men of sin, righteousness, and judgement so that they will turn from the path of sin unto righteousness and, ultimately, escape eternal damnation unto eternal life in Jesus Christ. No man will have an excuse if he misses this gracious work of salvation.
