LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Part 10).
1 Corinthians 2. Verses 11-13 read:
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Man is said to be primarily a spirit, having a soul and living in a body. The spirit is the real personality. He is more acquainted with and more knowledgeable of the man than any other faculty of his being. Similarly, the Holy Spirit has a perfect understanding of the Godhead. What is intriguing about the Holy Spirit is that he belongs to the Godhead and also resides in men who are yielded to the lordship of Christ. The Holy Spirit is, therefore, able to take the mysteries within the Godhead and make them revelations amongst men.
Today’s text emphatically states that believers did not receive the spirit of the world when they came to Christ. The spirit of the world makes men carnal, materialistic, and secular in their thinking. Rather, they received the spirit of God, which points to the Holy Spirit. God did this so that men may know the things he has freely given to them. The things God offers come at no cost to men, but they demand deep quest, hunger, thirst, and expectancy from men in order to attain them. Isaiah 55 verses 1-2 highlights the free offerings of God as follows:
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.
When we come under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit, we become well placed to reecho his words to our fellowmen, not by human wisdom, but by the enablement of the same Holy Spirit. In doing this, believers must not mix the spiritual things of God with the carnal operations of men. Simply put, it takes spiritually groomed men to render spiritual service acceptable to God. Yes, the tutelage of the Holy Spirit is moulding us into spiritual men who render spiritual services that positively impact the lives of men and bring glory to God.
