THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST (Part 2).
Colossians 1: 15-18. Verses 17&18 read:
“And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the Church; who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. “
Who and what can we compare with Jesus? The answer is absolutely nothing. His personality and operations continue to amaze anyone who catches a revelation of his outstanding qualities. All who truly encounter Christ continue to ask the very question his disciples asked; “what manner of man is this…….?” His realm and mode of operation is matchless.
Today’s text highlights five key pointers to Christ’s supremacy as follows:
- He is the foremost. In other words, he comes behind none and before all.
- By him, all things consist. In other words, it is by Jesus that all things obtain their composition, relevance, and significance. In addition, Jesus provides stability for all things. Indeed, he is the pivot around which all things revolve. He stabilizes and orders the course of affairs, and without him, all things remain in disarray.
- To the Church, which is God’s instrument for the roll out of divine purpose on earth, Jesus Christ is the head or leader. He is the vision bearer who provides direction and guidance to the body. This is what establishes the potent working relationship between Christ and his body. Without him, the Church can not function.
- Regarding his existence, he pre-dates the beginning.
- He defied death by laying down his life and taking it back. Death and the grave could not hold him down. Such outstanding qualities qualify him to have the preeminence in all things.
Jesus is indeed supreme. Let us always accord him this honour in all our endeavours; in our worship, service, reverence, obedience, and godly lifestyle. In this way, we affirm his supremacy and majesty to a world that has been blinded and engulfed in sin and wickedness.
