THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST (Part 15).

Matthew 28. Verses 1-6 read:

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: and for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Death has been touted as the irreversible end of man. While all men allude to the fact of dying one day, they live in the dread of the experience of death, hoping that it will never happen. According to Hebrews 2 verse 15, there are men who, through the fear of death, remained in bondage all their lives. Jesus, therefore, had to exercise mastery over death in order to establish supremacy over it.

Today’s text is a record of the resurrection of Christ. The women were on their way to the sepulchre to embalm Jesus. Before they got there, a great earthquake occurred as a result of the descent of the angel of the Lord from heaven. The angel rolled away the heavy stone covering the sepulchre and sat on it. The entrance stone cover was specially sealed under the king’s command by the most sophisticated security technology of the time. Notwithstanding, it could not oppose heaven’s determination that death would not hold down the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

The countenance of the angel was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Men intended to keep the grave impenetrable, but the heaven had to ensure it was open to bring into being the redemption plan for the salvation of humanity. The guards at post feared at the appearance of the angel. They were shaken and became like dead men. They could not stand against the heavenly force. The sight of the opened sepulchre baffled the women. The angel was quick to inform them not to fear and that Jesus, whom they were seeking for, was risen just as he said before his death. The angel invited them to inspect the empty sepulchre. Yes, Jesus had resurrected and was out of the sepulchre. Beloved, in his supremacy, Jesus demonstrated mastery over death to establish himself as the resurrection and the life.
