THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST (Part 14).

Luke 2. Verses 8-14 read:

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

The glory that shone on the shepherds and the angelic announcement of his birth are evidence of the importance of the person and mission of Jesus Christ on earth. The heavens could not keep silent because prophecy was being fulfilled, and the supremacy of Christ was about to find literal expression on earth.

Scripture says that a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God. It was time for the earth to be visited by the heavenly pattern of living. Successive generations of men failed to meet the mark of God. The heavenly host knew that the Word turned man, that is, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, would meet the set standard and bring redemption to all humanity. This explains their joy and spontaneous praise. It was a sight to behold, and blessed were the shepherds who saw it.

The heavenly host said, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.” This was an affirmation of the moves of God on the two divides of his reign: the heaven and earth. In heaven, it was all about the glory of God because the eternal plan of redemption had begun to find expression on earth. Regarding the earth, the pattern of living was aligning to heaven’s. The prevailing chaos, selfishness, and unrest were giving way to the precious virtue of peace among men because of the manifestation of the Prince of Peace. This peace refers to a life of rest in God, which Jesus promised in Matthew 11 verses 28-30. From this peace proceeds harmonious co-esxistence among men. Clearly, Christ’s incarnation struck a vital chord in heaven and changed the course of the earth to align with the divine plan. This is a testament to the supremacy of Christ.
