THE QUEST FOR GOD (Part 5).
Psalm 27:4 reads:
“One thing have I desired of the Lord , that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord , and to enquire in his temple.”
Amongst the myriad of competing desires that fill our hearts, we must be able to identify and commit to that singular desire that is able to rightly direct our lives into God’s perfect will. Unfortunately, there is so much vain dissipation of energy on things that are immaterial due to:
- A mix-up of multiplicity of desires, thereby drowning the overriding desire worth living for.
- An unclear definition of that one all-embracing desire, which directs men to God.
Jesus’ words to Martha in Luke 10 verses 41-42 clearly explains how men settle for other desires at the expense of the most important and ultimate desire for their existence. It reads: “……Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
Let us always be like Mary, whose quest was described by God as needful. From today’s text, we find David’s singular desire in life. It was to dwell in God’s presence, behold His beauty and enquire in His temple. In short, David’s quest was to know God. Indeed, David sought diligently after the Lord, and that was the secret of his greatness and his great success.
This brings us to a critical issue that ensures success in life, that is, the prioritization of our desires and aspirations. It’s important to note that success in our relationship with God is the fulcrum around which success in other aspects of life revolve. Jesus said in Matthew 6 verse 33 that:
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
May first things always remain first. We often get busy with other desires and relegate our quest for God to the background. We end up achieving those things that can not stand the tests of life. Sometimes, these achievements even crumble in our lifetime.
When the God factor is properly sorted, we face the other aspects of life with divine guidance, strength, and the right attitude. Always remember that our quest for God drives our total life’s success. Let’s keep focus on the one desire that is able to draw us into all-round success.
