LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Part 34).
Matthew 3. Verses 16-17 read:
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
We are continuing with our discussion on the solid partnership that existed between Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. It was a partnership that delivered the purpose of God on earth with flawless precision, thereby providing a standard of service, which successive generations of believers must emulate. This partnership was made publicly visible to all who were present when Jesus went to John to be baptised. According to today’s text, whilst Jesus was coming out of the River Jordan after his baptism, the heavens opened over him, and the Spirit of God descended and settled on him as a dove. The dove symbolizes the clean and gentle nature of the Holy Spirit.
The settling of the Holy Spirit on Christ was a sign of the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit on him. It also confirmed that the Spirit was the driving force behind all that Christ did. The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus with his full expression. This was evident in all areas of Jesus’ life, including his attitude, his passion, his rescue mission, his zeal, and the supernatural interventions he brought to men. The secret is that Jesus offered the Holy Spirit unhindered access to express himself through him. The outcome of Jesus’ actions is the raising of saints throughout all generations. Beloved, in any life where the Holy Spirit is given room to operate, godly results will be achieved, and the glory of God will be revealed.
After the Holy Spirit settled on Jesus, there came a voice from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” These were the words of the Heavenly Father. It was his testimony concerning his son. When the Holy Spirit comes upon a man and the man permits the Spirit to operate through him, God will testify of that man. May our operations be the kind that will always attract the commendation of God because we live, not by the flesh, but by the power of the Holy Spirit.
