LIVING BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Part 13).
Romans 8. Verses 3-4 read:
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Yesterday, we said that the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set men free from the law of sin and death. Believers are no longer under the hold of sin and death. Psalm 19 verses 7-8 have this to say about the potency of the law or word of God.
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
These verses use a number of terminologies to describe the word of God, namely the law, testimony, statutes, and commandments. These terminologies highlight different functions of the word in human life. From the same verses, the following adjectives are used to describe the attributes of the word of God; perfect, sure, right, and pure. These attributes reflect the infallibility of the word of God. Finally, these verses highlight the potency of the word as follows; it converts the soul, makes the simple hearted wise, delights the human heart, and enlightens the eyes. It is clear that the word of God has inherent power to transform men. However, the word faces opposition when it transits through the medium of human flesh.
The flesh refers to the part of a man’s life that has not succumbed to the renewing power of the spirit and the word of God. Beloved, the vulnerabilities of the flesh resist the full expression of the power of the word. Many men, including some believers, are caught in this situation. However, when Jesus came on the scene, he condemned sin in his body through his life of absolute obedience to God, even unto the death on the cross. Jesus did this so that the righteous requirements of the law will be fulfilled in the lives of men. Yes, it is now possible for men to meet the righteous requirements of God’s word. This can only be possible if men walk after the Spirit, and not after the flesh. It takes a spirit driven life to meet God’s standards.
