THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST (Part 5).
Psalm 2. Verses 1-5 read:
Why do the heathen rage, And the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, And cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: The Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, And vex them in his sore displeasure.
Having considered the conquest of Christ in the heavens, we want to shift our attention to the established pattern of the victory of the kingdom of God under the command of Christ over the forces of evil under the command of Satan. This is crucial in affirming the victories that God has ordained for the saints on earth. The word heathen refers to a godless movement of spiritual and human entities under the command of Satan that is out to perpetuate evil in every realm of existence.
Scripture questions why the heathen rages and remains continually restless to do evil. They imagine vain or unprofitable things. Under the manipulation of Satan, a coalition of kings, rulers, and men of authority partner to set up systems that frustrate the purpose of the Lord and his anointed one, Jesus Christ. The goal is for them to break free from the constraints meted out to them through the ministry of Christ and his disciples. The truth is that where believers are effective in rendering effective worship and service, an embargo is placed on the activities and operations of the devil. This is the limitation Christ and his body of believers raise against satanic forces.
In the desperate bid of the heathen to defy the restrictions from the Most High, the Lord laughs at them with scorn. That is to tell them that theirs efforts are in vain. The Lord then puts them in derision and releases his wrath against them. At this point, it is important to remind ourselves of the very words declared by God in Genesis 3 verse 15 that define the results of the contest between Christ and Satan. It says:
…….and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
- The contest is established on the grounds of enmity between Satan and the woman. The woman refers to the church of which Christ is the head.
- The enmity extends to the seed of Satan and the seed of the church. The demonic hosts and the followers of Christ represent the seed of Satan and Christ, respectively.
- In this contest, the satanic entities are out to bruise the heel of the church. This is purely a blind spot operation, which can not succeed if the church stays spiritually alert. On the other hand, the church will crush the head of the serpent, which describes the absolute defeat of satanic forces.
The outcome of the battle is defined. Satan and his cohorts are losers, Christ, and his church are victors.
