THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST (Part 11).

Hebrews 1. Verses 10-14 read:

He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment, they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

We are still discussing the supremacy of Christ, which manifests in the absolute superiority he demonstrated over various entities. According to today’s text, Jesus is described as the one who laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens at the beginning. Indeed, in the beginning, he was the creative word, who was with God and by whom all non-existent things came into being. Refer to John 1 verses 1-3. Beloved, Jesus is self-existent, and, therefore, he is superior to all created things. As the creator, he is greater than his creation.

Scripture goes on to make a comparison between created things and Jesus Christ with a focus on their longevity. All created things will perish one day, but Jesus Christ, as the Word, will abide forever. Refer to 2 Peter 3 verse 10. All created things will be rolled away like a garment, but the word will abide forever. Refer to Luke 21 verse 33. Hebrews 13 verse 8 says that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus is everlasting, but created things have an end regardless of how long they live.

In the same Hebrews chapter 1, there is yet another comparison between Christ and angels. Angels are celestial and, therefore, share a glory or splendour that is different from what humans have. Refer to 1 Corinthians 15 verse 40. This notwithstanding, through sonship, Jesus had a superior status compared to the angels. The Heavenly Father told Jesus to sit at his right hand until he made his enemies his footstool, but he never said that to any of his angels.

In conclusion, scripture positions angels in their rightful place within the hierarchy of God’s household. In God’s household, angels are spirits sent by God to attend to those who will inherit salvation, which refers to those who express faith in the atoning work of Christ and continue in the standards of God’s word. Jesus, as the Son is superior to angels and all who have come into sonship, share the same status with our Saviour and Lord. Refer to Romans 8 verse 17.
