THE QUEST FOR GOD (Part 13)

THE QUEST FOR GOD (Part 13).

Psalm 18. Verses 1 – 3 read.

I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: So shall I be saved from mine enemies.

In Psalm 18, David narrates the ordeals he endured in life and how God delivered him as a result of his deep quest for the Lord. God will surely come through for those who follow hard after him. David’s perspective about God played a key role in the victories he won. He began today’s text by expressing his affection for God based on the perspective he held about him. David uses some covenant based terminologies that reflect his personal perspective of who God is.

He described God as His rock or the stable ground on which he stood. As a result, he could not be moved. Next, David describes the Lord as His fortress. In other words, the Lord is his safe and secure hideout from the onslaughts of the evil one. Again, he describes the Lord as his deliverer or the one who rescues him from his strong opponents. David further describes the Lord as His God or the supreme ruler of his life. In other words, he was under the control of the omnipotent and matchless one. David goes on to describe the Lord as His strength. Thus, he did not depend on human ability but on divine ability.

Furthermore, David describes God as his buckler, the horn of his salvation, and his high tower. As his buckler, God protected him from the darts of the wicked one. As the horn of his salvation, the Lord was the one on whom he held for safety. As his high tower, the Lord provided him a place of spiritual surveillance where he could see the visitations of the Lord as well as the attacks of the devil. Thus, David knew what to do at any time. This explains the great victories he had in his battles.

These perspectives of God drew David closer to the Lord and inspired him to render praise to the Almighty, who is deserving of adoration. David concluded by saying that his praise to God was his means of obtaining salvation from enemies. I pray that our spiritual eyes will be opened to perceive all that God is to us to keep us ever drawn to him.
