ATTITUDE TOWARDS WORK – SLOTHFULNESS OR DILIGENCE? (Part 2).
Genesis 1. Verses 26-28 read:
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Yesterday, we indicated that men attend to their work, either with the attitude of slothfulness or diligence. Whichever attitude a man chooses determines the outcome of his work. As men, we must be mindful of the outcomes in all our endeavours. Outcomes, be they good or bad, define man’s future, whether in rulership or subserviency.
Again, yesterday’s text was explicit on the outcome of human attitude towards work. The diligent turn out as rulers, whereas the slothful end up in servitude. It is worth mentioning that the first man, Adam, was created to have dominion over all of God’s creation. All men are to follow suit in the mandate given to Adam. Today’s text highlights the following critical points about work:
- Man was created and mandated to exercise dominion or rulership over God’s creation.
- For this reason, man was created in the image and likeness of God. Thus, man has the capacity to operate according to God’s mode of operation.
- Man’s growth unto dominion or rulership is directly related to his progressive maturing in his level of productivity. Yes, rulership does not come in a day. It journeys from fruitfulness, moves through multiplication, replenishment, and ends up at subduing. This is the place of rulership.
Rulership or the exercise of dominion does not come cheap. It is attained by dint of hard work. This is the story of diligent men. The slothful fail to take responsibility and therefore remain in subserviency to others. If we desire to bear the rule, we must give ourselves wholly to the power of diligence.
